Kusal Perera named captain of the Sri Lanka ODI side to tour Bangladesh

Kusal Perera will lead Sri Lanka in a three-match ODI series in Bangladesh later this month after being named captain of an 18-member side on Wednesday (12 May).

Sri Lanka secured the two-match Test series 1-0 against Bangladesh earlier this month, and will now travel to Bangladesh, hoping to get off the mark in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League.

The ODI side has had quite a shake-up: While Kusal Perera is set to captain the side, Kusal Mendis was recalled and made vice-captain, and former captain Dimuth Karunaratne has been dropped. Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal were other veterans who failed to make the squad.

There were several other changes – fast-bowler Chamika Karunaratne and batsman Shiran Fernando earned their maiden limited-overs call-ups, while Binura Fernando and Asith Fernando also made the grade, with the selectors presumably keeping an eye on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Danushka Gunathilaka, Ashen Bandara and Wanindu Hasaranga all retained their place after impressive performances in the tour of the Caribbean in March.

Squad: Kusal Perera (c), Kusal Mendis, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Pathum Nissanka, Dasun Shanaka, Ashen Bandara, Wanindu Hasaranga, Isuru Udana, Akila Dananjaya, Niroshan Dickwella, Dushmantha Chameera, Ramesh Mendis, Asitha Fernando, Lakshan Sandakan, Chamika Karunaratne, Binura Fernando, Shiran Fernando.
